Budapest is the capital of Hungary and the largest city with over 1.7 million inhabitants. Budapest became a single city occupying both banks of the river Danube with a unification in 1873 of right-bank Buda and Óbuda with left-bank Pest.
Regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, its extensive World Heritage Site includes the banks of the Danube, the Buda Castle Quarter, Andrássy Avenue, Heroes' Square and the Millennium Underground Railway, the second oldest in the world.
IBS offers accommodation for its students in the Residence Hall that is situated right next to the school building and has single or shared rooms with bathroom and internet access.
Budapest has a relatively inexpensive public transport system owned by the state with 3 underground lines (’metró’ in Hungarian), 5 suburban train lines (’HÉV’ in Hungarian), trams, buses and trolley buses. The fastest way to get to a place is by vehicles that run on rails (metro, suburban trains and trams).
The official currency of Hungary is the forint (HUF). Common paper bills are the 20,000, 10,000, 5,000, 1,000 and 500 forint bills. The coins come in 200, 100, 50, 20, 10, 5. As of March 1, 2008 coins 2 and 1 are no longer
accepted.
