Intensive English Language Programme (IELP)

1. Introduction to the Programme

The Intensive English Language Programme (IELP) is a one-year full-time course of 22 hours of English per week that is 600 hours per academic year. The IELP programme offers you a thorough knowledge, understanding and practice of general English language skills (and business English vocabulary at higher levels) at various language levels with the primary objective to prepare students for continuing their studies in English at bachelor level. It is therefore first and foremost recommended to those who eventually wish to obtain a degree from International Business School / Oxford Brookes University. But it is also ideal for those who simply want to improve their English for reasons of their choice. Students are grouped according to their present level of English, the levels ranging form Beginner to Upper-Intermediate / Advanced.

The IELP Programme can be chosen prior to the college studies or following the first academic year. 

2. Programme Learning Outcomes

When you have successfully completed the Intensive English Language Programme (IELP), you will achieve a substantial rise in the level of English which will enable you to continue your studies in English.
Having completed the first semester of the IELP, students continue and move one level up in the second semester.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

By the end of the programme you will have

  • Developed and improved your pronunciation skills.
  • Gained and improved theoretical knowledge in various grammatical areas and have practice of that language.
  • Achieved a high level of written and oral proficiency in English language.
  • Gained thorough practice in reading and listening skills.
  • Gained insight into the English business language with practical use of the language in a business context. 

3. Programme Structure

According to the Placement Exam written at the beginning of the academic year, teaching will be carried out at 4 or 5 (if there are advanced level students) language levels. At all of those levels there are different subjects taught. The various subjects are: Pronunciation (2 hours), Use of English (10 hours) and Skills Development (10 hours) on the Beginner level; Use of English (8 hours), Reading and Writing Skills (4 hours), Listening and Speaking Skills (4 hours) and Business English (6 hours) on higher levels.

SKILLS

Pronunciation

With the help of this subject students improve their articulation and intonation in English.

Use of English:

The subject aims to improve the language abilities in general, especially focusing on the expansion of the range of vocabulary, accuracy and the most frequently used grammatical areas.

Skills Development

This subject aims to improve the listening and speaking, as well as the reading and writing skills of the students. It focuses mainly on the improvement of students’ fluency in English

Listening and Speaking

This subjects aims to improve students’ listening and speaking skills.

Reading and Writing

This subjects aims to improve students’ reading and writing skills.

Business English

Students learn the basic vocabulary and theories behind English language used in a business context and therefore building on the oral and written skills.

TESTS

We evaluate the performance of students in each subject twice each semester. Every 7 weeks students receive a Progress Report about their performance in each English subject taught at their level.
In the light of the average results and the absence ratio throughout the two semesters, IELP students receive a Certificate at the end of the academic year. Certificates can only be obtained by those students who comply with the requirements concerning presence and fulfil all subject requisites as well.

EXAMINATIONS

In order to place you in particular level group, you have to take a Placement Exam at the beginning of the academic year. The group you will be put into will define the kind of subjects you will have to take.

There is also a Placement Exam at the end of the IELP programme for you to demonstrate your improvement of English achieved during your studies throughout the year, and to demonstrate and measure your language skills if you wish to continue your studies at the college on the various courses offered.
